Week 7 (14/05/21)

We had a public holiday during Week 7, so I focused on brainstorming the concept for my book design.

I looked into the UI Design trends of 2020/2021 since the dissertation revolves around UI Design. There were many fun trends, but I settled on the gradient trend. I think it can be easily translated into my design. My typeface selection was based on popular typeface characteristic selections for UI Design. I went with "Montserrat" as it is a simple text typeface. I initially wanted to follow the 2020/2021 colour trend, but I decided not to as one of my conclusion for the research was that "colours are subjective and need more confirmation". Once everything was confirmed, I went on Pinterest to find some references for the book design. Below is a screenshot of my mood board:

Week 8 (14/05/21)

This week was self-learning week. I only managed to do the book cover up till the start of the content page. Below is my progression for Week 8 :

Week 9 (28/05/21)

After receiving feedback from Dr Hayati, I added another typeface as a title text since it looked too bland. I also completed the book design up till Section 3. Below is the progression for Week 9:

Week 10 (04/06/21)

I was sick this week, so I didn't attend class or get anything done. 

Week 11 (11/06/21)

I managed to finish the book design up till Section 4. Dr Hayati fell sick this week, so we couldn't have class. I sent my progression to Dr Hayati personally to get some feedback. Below is my progression for Week 11:

Week 12 (18/06/21)

After receiving feedback from Dr Hayati regarding my draft dissertation, I made further amendments to it during the week. Below is the revised dissertation :

Once everything was done, I submitted the revised dissertation to Turnitin. Below is the Turnitin report:

For the book design, I decided that I actually did not like how my gradients looked like. I did not have a fixed colour palette and gradient style, so I redid all the gradients and set a new colour palette. I also added an off white colour for the background because I didn't like the white.

I redid most of my gradients but also reused some of the ones that I was okay with. The top row gradients are the ones from previous attempts. The bottom two are the latest attempts.

I managed to complete all the designs except for Sections 3 and 4. With the addition of the new background colour, the white background of the graphics looked too out of place. I decided that I would be reworking them along with the two sections after Week 12. Below is my progression for Week 12:

Week 13 (25/06/21)

I experimented with the designs for the graphs. I also added some simple illustrations for the online survey section since it was the only section involving other participants. I wanted it to be slightly more lively. Below is Week 13's progression. I finished all the graphs, but the designs for sections 3 and 4 are not completely done.

Week 14 (02/07/21)

I finished the entire book design by this week. I made minor amendments to the green shades as it felt a bit too out of place. Other than that, I redesigned the photos included in the book and added a bit more illustrated characters to specific pages. 

I also noticed that I totally forgot to replace the content with the revised version, so I updated the content to the revised dissertation. There were minor amendments made to the layout of certain pages.

FEEDBACK

Week 9 (28/05/21)

Try looking for more references on Pinterest. It currently looks a bit more towards something more corporate so try finding corporate book layout references. Look at some of David Carson and Paula Scher’s work.

Week 12 (18/06/21)

I should be able to know how to finish my designs. I'll need to continue looking for more references when doing the designs. For the dissertation, Dr Hayati gave a lot of feedback and advice to help me improve my writing. She asked me to be consistent with American and British spelling, choose only one style of writing. I'll need to double-check if the page numbers are correct. I'll also need to relook into Sections 2 & 5 and syntheses the statement.
