Project 1 - Poster
For this project, we had to choose a recipe and create a poster based on it.
At the beginning, I wanted to do something Korean cause I was really craving Korean food. In the end I shortlisted Korean Army Stew and Bibimbap.
After looking through recipes, I decided that I would go with Bibimbap since Korean Army Stew is just throwing everything you got into a stew and boil it.
This is the link that I referred to : Bibimbap Recipe
Once I decided which recipe I wanted to work on, I started looking online for Recipe Infographics. I wanted to look at how other people design infographics for recipes.
Looking at the reference, I noticed that most of the infographics have their dishes right at the center so that it could be focused. They also have different sections so that the audience won't be lost as if when everything is clumped together. Besides that, I also like that there are still words and short paragraphs to explain more instead of just visuals. With these in mind, I wanted to try incorporating them into my recipe infographic.
Since Bibimbap has a lot of vegetables and is more to a down-to-earth dish, I wanted to use more earthy tones.
Since most of the ingredients are very common, I didn't really use any reference. However, Gochujang isn't a household item so I had to search online for a reference.
I wrote down the recipe so it would be easier for me to visualize what I needed to do for my poster. I noticed that there was soooooo much steps and ingredient to include. After looking through everything, I feel like there was no way I could include everything so I tried to see which parts I could leave out or combine. In the end, I decided to combine the steps for all the vegetables since all of them are quite similar.
I tried to sketch a few drafts briefly and I decided that I would go for the last one.
I started by illustrating some of the assets based on my recipe.
I then moved my assets into another folder. The reason why I did this was because I wasn't sure if it would be too much and make the whole thing too cramp. I also wanted to visualize how much of space I have for the other parts of the poster.
I added a background using the motif on the gochujang since I find it a bit boring.
I added the Bibimbap illustration and all the small boxes to see if everything would fit.
At the bottom box, I added a short description of what is bibimbap since there might be people who aren't aware of this dish. I also added that you need to place the rice beneath everything (cause I forgot about the rice :') )
I added all the ingredients needed to create the paste.
I wasn't sure if the ingredients can be easily identified so I decided that it would be better if I included text so people can associate the icons with the actual food.
I felt that the first attempt was really weird so I did it another way.
At this point, I was done drawing all of the assets and these are the final assets.
I added the remaining assets to the steps for preparing meat and vegetables.
Once I was done with this, I went to Mr Kannan and asked for feedback. He mentioned a few points that I could improve on which are :
I made amendments based on Mr Kannan's feedback but I really couldn't think of how I should include the title. I also found it really bright which to me didn't fit the Earthy theme. I was trying to go for. After asking for some opinions, almost all of my friends suggested that I go for the old title. One also mentioned that the steps for the paste were a bit unclear since it was on top of the bowl.
This is my final attempt for the poster. As you can see, I changed the background colour and title back to the original one. I also made a bit of adjustments to the sizing of a few things so that it would fit better (hopefully) because one of my friend complained that she didn't know where to focus :'). I don't know if I like it but I think I like it?
While doing the animation, I noticed that some of the assets needed different layers for me to animate them. With that, these are the remaining assets.
This is the compilation of all the assets.
For my animation, I mainly adjusted scale, position and opacity to achieve my final outcome. I also referred to some videos so I could understand how to do different effects and to learn more about some tools. Some links that I referred to are : Revealing Text with Shape and Pop Up Animation.
Once I was done with the animation bit, I added a background music.
When I was uploading my final outcome to YouTube as well as this blog, I noticed that my file size was tooooooo big. I was asking my friends for help and whether it's normal that it's 13.2GB. In the end, my friend noticed that the reason behind it is that all of my assets were saved as high quality which made the file super big. In the end, I had to save the animation as a lower quality version since there's definitely no more time for me to redo anything. Thus, my final animated infographic is a bit blurry but I guess I'll always remember to save my files in lower quality.
Below is my final outcome :

Once I was done with this, I went to Mr Kannan and asked for feedback. He mentioned a few points that I could improve on which are :
- The title doesn't really stand out from the poster. Also, the typeface for the heading doesn't really suit my visuals and the typeface that I used for the text because the typeface I used for the title has a handwritten style and the rest of my infographic has a vector style. He recommend that I try changing the typeface and also try to make it stand out.
- He thinks that the ingredient list is too clustered. Also, since the text isn't aligned with the icons, he said that I should try aligning everything so that the audience would understand it more. He wants me to assume that the audience don't know anything. He also said that I could try making all the icons a bit smaller so it would look less cramp.
- Mr Kannan said that I should try highlighting some of the colours. Just by looking at the infographic, he could tell that I used CMYK. He said that I should use RGB for a change since the colours would be more vibrant.
