Exercise 1
27/08/19 (Week 1)

For our first lecture, we learned about some basic functions in Photoshop. We tried photoshopping Dora into the Hearst Mansion. The photos used were :

Figure 1.01 Dora Poster

Figure 1.02 Hearst Mansion

What we did to photoshop Dora into the Hearst Mansion were :
1. Cropping the image of Dora
2. Applying a mask to Dora to outline her silhouette
3. Creating Dora's shadow
4. Creating Dora's reflection
5. Adjusting the resolution, colour and proportion of Dora to fit the background
6. Adding ripples to Dora's reflection in the water.

Here is the screenshot of all the layers :

The final outcome :

Figure 1.4 Dora at Hearst Mansion

Through this exercise, I noticed that there was a problem with the lighting as the direction of the lighting for both the mansion and Dora is different. This will make it look unrealistic and the shadows are also quite awkward. For the assignment, I'll have to be careful with the lighting and shadow.

Our assignment was to photoshop ourselves into the same picture of the Hearst Mansion. I finish the assignment using the same technique taught while photoshopping Dora into the Hearst Mansion.

Here are the screenshots of the layers :

Exercise 2
03/09/19 (Week 2)

Today, we learn how to create a scene of a haunted mansion. This involves putting a old building into the selected background and placing a ghost bride into the building. The photos used were :

Figure 2.03 Ghost Bride
Below are some of the screenshots I took during the exercise :

For the assignment, we have to photoshop another old building into the sunset.

The first version I went with was photoshopping the old house into sunset option 2.

I then went on to photoshop the old house into sunset option 2.

For fun, I photoshopped the old house onto the clouds.

Exercise 3
10/09/19 (Week 3)
This week was about how to recolour a black and white photo. The photo given was :
Figure 3.1 Black and white portrait
Figure 3.2 Screenshot of layers
Figure 3.3 Recoloured portrait
For this practice, we used a lot of mask to create this end product. (Note : ctrl + backspace to change the entire colour of the layer)

Moving on to our assignment, I use a photo of Taeyeon from Girls Generation. This photo was taken for her album "This Christmas)
Figure 3.4 Black and white Taeyeon
Using the same techniques, I tried recolouring the photo. (Note : Select - Colour Range can help select messy hair)
Figure 3.5 Screenshot of layers 01

Figure 3.6 Screenshot of layers 02
I used more layers for this one compared to the portrait one because the complexion for this one was more dull so I had to make her look more lively.

Exercise 4
17/09/19 (Week 4)

This week was about displacement. We learnt how to use displacement map to give an image a texture of choice. The image will wrap around the curves of the texture.
Figure 4.1 Silk Texture
First, we have to turn the saturation down to black and white. Save the displacement map as a psd file. (Filter - Distort - Displace) and choose the displacement map. Adjusting the pixels will effect how much the photo is displaced.

Figure 4.4 Flag
Since the size of the silk texture was small, the end product turned out to be very blur.

For the next exercise, we had to put a texture on the man's face.

Moving on for our assignment, we were told to displace a skin texture onto another animal/human. I chose to give a squirrel tiger skin.

Exercise 5
24/09/19 (Week 5)

For this week's exercise, we had to go online to find our materials and create a floating castle. The main elements are a castle, rock, sea and sky.

Figure 5.1 Castle

Figure 5.2 Floating Rock

Figure 5.3 Sea

Figure 5.4 Sky
Figure 5.5 Layout of the floating castle
After adding all the needed elements, I added some extra stuff. I didn't want to go to extra, I wanted it to be more calm and mysterious (maybe slightly magical). To do this, I added some birds, sailboats and also a rainbow (for the magical aspect). Since I wanted to keep it realistic but also slightly mysterious, I made the rainbow come out from the castle. Which is not rational since rainbows don't work that way. I also chose to use sailboats instead of ships because it's also not rational for a sailboat to be so far out the sea. But I feel like that's what makes it irrational and makes you think "how can a place like this exist?"
