Project 1 - Promotional Packaging
Week 7 (13/05/21)
For this assignment, we are supposed to create a happy meal design with an educational message behind it. We will also need to design the fries packaging along with the happy meal packaging.
Mr Shamsul did briefly mention that it would be better if we shifted away from the Covid 19 pandemic topic since most of our seniors have done that last semester. In the beginning, I was thinking if I wanted to try designing something using the topic of racial discrimination or animal adoption. In the end I went with animal adoption because I've learnt that Malaysians are very sensitive to racial topics through my Community Service Initiative module and I was afraid that it would be hard to come up with a design that is acceptable to the public even though this project is just for fun. Also, I wasn't sure if I was educated well on the topic, so I did not want to include messages that are deceiving.
With that, I went on an did some more research on animal adoption. I decided to target on the movement "Adopt Don't Shop" because of it's meaning. I also wanted to do this topic because my relatives recently helped save 8 puppies that were thrown on the street by the "owners" and we manage to place them into new homes, so I think this kind of awareness is very meaningful.
Here are some articles I read. The articles speak similar values but I wanted to see how different people communicate the same idea so I can have some ideas on how I could too.
Below is the message I wanted to deliver. I wanted to write it in a very simple and slightly childish way since the target audience is children.
Figure 1.1 Content Flow
After roughly deciding on the flow, I move on to create a rough sketch on how I wanted the design to be. Below is a really rough sketch of how I visualized the design. I basically wanted to focus more on the graphics and have the text be like supporting text / captions to the visuals.

I then went to search for some references for the visuals. I wanted to go for a sloppy line art illustration since it's for children. I mainly looked for cartoonish pets to see how I can draw animals.

Week 8 (20/06/21)
I used the version of the McDonald Happy Meal Packaging below for the project.

I then went on to create each design. Below are the designs for each sides:

With the designs done, I placed them onto the dieline I traced out:

I then noticed that the dieline was wrong because I placed the front design at the right side instead of in the middle. This would mean that the closing would be at the front so that didn't seem too appropriate. I changed the placement of the design so the front design would be in front.

Once the Happy meal packaging was done, I went on to design the fries packaging. I decided to remain the front design from the happy meal packaging as the back design of the fries. For the front, I used the puppy that the person was holding for the design and placed it on the smile of the McDonald label so it looks like it's holding the puppy.

After the designs were done, I went on to do the mock ups. Below are the mock ups for the designs:
