LECTURE NOTES

25/08/20 (Week 1)

Mr Martin briefed us on our projects and exercises for this semester. We were also required to get a tripod, headset, install Premiere Pro, Audition, and After Effects.

After that, Mr Martin gave us video exercises to practice our Premiere Pro skills. Some basic instructions in Premiere Pro are :

  1. Import Files : Ctrl + I
  2. Drag the file you've chosen into the timeline to start.
  3. After that, you can click right click on the next video and click "insert" to insert it as the next video.
  4. Export File : Ctrl + M
  5. Format : H.264

We were given 1 exercise in class and 1 to do at home.

01/09/20 (Week 2)

Over The Shoulder Shot
It helps put us in the character's perspective. We get to see what they see at their point of view. Although it's called the Over The Shoulder Shot, it doesn't actually have to be at the shoulder. Sometimes the angle might be adjusted to the actually subject that we want to show so it looks more logical. For example, it can be taken at a lower angle to show the subject that is closer to the ground.

Extreme Wide Shot
It's used to show the whole surrounding around the character. It helps convey scale and distance.

Wide Shot
It includes the entire subject and its surrounding. This helps the viewers to understand the setting. It's also known as "establishing shot".

Medium Wide Shot
This is usually cut of around the knee.

Medium Shot
It's a shot that's used frequently. Medium shots are taken from the waist up to emphasis on certain expressions and gestures.

Medium Close-up Shot
This shot would help further emphasis on certain details such as an expression. It's more intermate so the audience can understand better and see more details.

Close-up Shot
Shows the key of the object.

Extreme Close-up Shot
Similar like Close-Up Shot but even closer. Helps emphasis certain features and expressions.

Camera Angle
1. Rule of Third
2. Composition
3. Subject Height

EXERCISE

Premiere Pro Editing Exercise 1

For today's class, we practice by arranging the video clips into a full composition.

Below is the finished compilation for the exercise :

Premiere Pro Editing Exercise 2

For the second exercise, it was a bit harder cause the video sequence isn't arranged accordingly. The correct sequence is : 1 - 12 - 8 - 14 - 15 - 10 - 6 - 2 - 19 - 3 - 20 - 18 - 5 - 16 - 13 - 7 - 4 - 11 - 9 - 21

Shooting Exercise

We were supposed to take video shots based on the type of shots given. It doesn't have to have a storyline, we just need to show our understanding on camera shots.

Below is my video to the exercise :

Premiere Pro Editing Exercise 3

For our 3rd exercise, we were told to edit a video that was remade from Lalin by our seniors. We were given all the raw footage and we had to cut off all the unnecessary parts and make it into an actual short film.

This is the link to the original video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehc52wBiUqE&t=266s
