I didn't want to introduce too much new tears to the poster as the tears on the key artwork already has a shape and direction. It would be awkward to introduce too many new tears so I decided to introduce 2 for the dates. I lowered the opacity for the text so it wouldn't be too distracting from the key artwork.

LECTURE NOTES
Lecture 6
30/09/20 (Week 6)
Mr Vinod briefed us on our Project 1B. It is continued from our Project 1A. Based on our key artwork, we have to first come out with a poster for this week. The poster has to have our key artwork and the overall poster has to display the style of our key artwork.
Lecture 7
07/10/20 (Week 7)
Mr Vinod and Mr Asrizal gave us feedback for our poster and wanted us to work on the rest of our collaterals. We have to design an animated e-invite, and 2 more collaterals. Our collaterals can be a T-shirt, tote bag, etc. It's best if we can think of creative products to work with, and the products must also make sense. The collaterals have to display key aspects of our key artwork and mimic the style.
Lecture 8
14/10/20 (Week 8)
This week was study week so we didn't have any lecture. Feedback was given through FB comments and posts.
Lecture 9
21/10/20 (Week 9)
Final feedbacks on our projects were given. Mr Vinod briefed us on our Project 2 at the end of the class.

PROJECT 1B - Collateral (Week 6 - Week 9)
Week 6 (30/09/20)
I looked for interesting collateral designs online to see if I could get some inspiration for how I wanted to incorporate my key artwork into the collaterals. Below are some photos that inspired me for the project:

As the key artwork was kind of settled, I moved on to the poster design.
Since my backdrop was red, I felt like if I introduced too much tear, it might take away the focus from my key artwork. Thus, I was kind of confused as to how I could introduce the rest of the information into the poster. Below are the 2 outcomes:

I didn't want to introduce too much new tears to the poster as the tears on the key artwork already has a shape and direction. It would be awkward to introduce too many new tears so I decided to introduce 2 for the dates. I lowered the opacity for the text so it wouldn't be too distracting from the key artwork.

I tried doing one big tear at the bottom and have most of the information written on the red paper. I also added a lined paper effect on the red paper since it was exposed more compared to the key artwork and the other poster design.
Week 7 (07/10/20)
After receiving feedback, I altered my poster based on it. Below is the updated version of the poster:

I then moved on to the other collateral. Some of the collateral I was deciding to create were:
- T-shirt
- Name Tag / ID Card
- Entrance Ticket
- Tote Bag
- Bookmark
I tried to come up with the designs of the collateral by sketching out some rough ideas on my sketchbook.

After working on the designs in Illustrator, I continued making the effects in After effects. In the end, I find that spread 5 didn't really look good with the effects I had in mind so I changed it. The effect I went for at the end was having the the key artwork ripped away to see the event details, and then reverse the effect to show "The Design School @ Taylor's University". I felt like it also made the ending connected to the beginning.
I wanted the tearing of the paper to look like it's actually being teared, so I had to search for a tutorial online. I noticed that there was no way for me to connect the tear layer in my illustrator file to after effects so I had to do the tear effect in After Effects. Click here for the tutorial I followed to create the tear effect.

FEEDBACK
Week 7 (07/10/20)
Specific Feedback:
REFLECTION
Findings :
Week 7 (07/10/20); I find that I really enjoy typography and I actually do enjoy creating brand identities (?) although it's tough. It's kinda making me reconsider my specialization. Week 8 (14/10/20); I find that I'm more comfortable with all of the projects right now and that I should have improved since the beginning of the semester. I'm also really glad that I changed my key artwork which lead to me doing the key artwork easier. Week 9 (21/10/20); I find that a few of my classmates had really cool ideas for their collaterals and some of them really looked like it was for an actual event and I would definitely consider buying some of the collaterals if they were legit. I personally don't even know if I would buy my own collaterals, but theirs definitely look cool and interesting enough for me to consider purchasing it.
FURTHER READING
Poster: The one with a rip on the bottom looks too conservative, the other poster looks better compared to the other as the rip effect is well cooperated into the poster design. Try to make the point size and the opacity more random. Remember that the open public lecture and lecture theater 12 is used to describe the event and the venue for both days, thus should be treated as a different set of information.
Week 8 (14//10/20)
General Feedback:
For the animated invite, we have to make sure that it is readable even on our own phone. Make sure to test it beforehand. The animated invite has to be 1000px x 1000px).
Specific Feedback:
More seconds needed for the part with a lot of text. Also the layout needs of the text does it mimic the poster? Text seems too small for mobile. Applications are good. Good work there.
Week 9 (21/10/20)
General Feedback:
Poster layouts have to be aligned with the style of the key artwork. Use your imagination for the collaterals, don't just slap the key artwork onto it. Text in animation should be visible even on a mobile phone and must reflect the mood/style/layout of the artwork.
Specific Feedback:
Applications are all clear. For the E-invite, can try breaking down the information so it doesn't all come out at once.
REFLECTION
Experience :
Week 7 (07/10/20); This week was kinda fun since I got to brainstorm and create different collaterals. I'm still a bit wary about the designs but it was a really fun process. My laptop is a bit slow because of the paper effect that I created, so it was taking quiteeee a lot of time for me to do the designs, but overall it was still manageable. Week 8 (14/10/20); Was happy that my collateral designs were sort of approved. As I wasn't sure if it was 3 collaterals aside from e-invite or including, I just created an extra collateral design for the project. Week 9 (21/10/20); As everything was done and I only needed to do some minor changes for my e-invite, I was kind chilled and relieved that I could finally work on my Project 2. Overall this project was really fun an interesting and I would had liked to create more collaterals if I could.
Observation :
Week 7 (07/10/20); I noticed that I'm getting more and more familiar with the Adobe applications this semester after all of the assignments and outside practices I've been doing. But there's definitely more that I should learn! At the same time, I feel like I've been a little bit lazy this semester as I'm not that active in recording my progress as well as not doing as many attempts as I used to be doing. I don't know if it's because I just feel more comfortable to the style I go for in my assignments, thus me not redoing it too many times since I'm more satisfied with it; or that I just am not putting that much effort in producing better work. Either ways, I should be more hard working for the rest of the semester, not only in Adv. Typography. Week 8 (14/10/20); I noticed that my computer is really really dying from this project. It's just super lag for some reason whenever I open the files. At least it doesn't lag in After Effects. Week 9 (21/09/20); At this point I don't know if my computer is slow or I am slow. I feel like although I'm more familiar with the applications I'm using than before, I feel that I'm taking a bit more time in finishing certain task.

Development of Type and Designs during the Industrial Revolution
Firmin Didot was the first Modern typeface in 1784. It is a fond with thin serifs, extreme contrast, and a vertical angle of stress. Soon after that, Giambattista Bodoni, an Italian designer, produce typefaces inspired by Didot's work. The typeface reflected the machine age as they had dramatic vertical stress and high contrast between thick and thin letter parts, leaving large proportions of open space. Typefaces that resonated with the typefaces created by the two designers are referred to as Modern Typeface.
Fat faces were created around the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as there was a sudden abundance of products to buy. As papers become more affordable, advertisements were widely used. With that, advertisers wanted to use bold, larger, and decorative typefaces for display. However, some fat faces were not as legible as it should be, even though it's used for display purposes. A digital typeface called Bodoni Poster was designed closely based on early Fat face design.
The first Egyptian typefaces emerged as novelty typeface for display in the early nineteenth century. These typefaces are easy to recognize as they are distinctively squared, have slab-like serifs and have low contrast between their thick and thin letter part. These typefaces are called Egyptian as they reference the blocky horizontal look of Egyptian hieroglyphics. A typeface that is under this category and is still well recognized even till this day is Clarendon, designed by Robert Basley.
The fist Sans-Serif typeface was introduced around the same timing by William Caslon. It was a variation on the Egyptian-style. Though it wasn't popular during that period of time, sans-serif are widely use for display purposes in the twentieth century, and it's still going strong till this day.

Linotype
This machine was the first great step towards typographic automation. It was invented in the 1886 by Ottmar Mergenthaler. It was able to produce a single line of type to a predetermined length specified by the keyboard operator. The advantage of this machine compared to hand composition was how fast and accurate it was.
Monotype
The monotype machine was invented by Tolbert Lanston in1887. This machine cast one character a time rather than an entire line. It was composed by a keyboard and a typecaster. When an operator typed at a keyboard, a perforated paper tape was generated. This coded tape would drive the typecaster. It was very efficient as corrections could be made by changing individual letters instead of a complete line.
Ludlow
Unlike the linotype and monotype, the Ludlow machine did not have a keyboard but combined both hand and machine production, Type produced by this machine ranged from 6 to 144 points. The major use was to produce display type for headlines and other purposes that required large typeface. As it was still a handset composition, the machine was neither practical nor efficient for setting large volume of type.
