Week 7 (17/02/20)

As we were done with our Data Collection presentation, we decided that we really wanted to work on our idea which is milk packaging.

We went on to find inspiration on the Web. These are a few packaging that inspired me :

In the end, Phang Shuen created a short slide show by compiling some of our findings so we could present our ideas better when we consult Ms Anis during the following week.

Week 8 (24/02/20)

24/02/20 (Day 0)

We showed Ms Anis the slides and presented our ideas.

Initially, we wanted to create a milk packaging that would tell the myth of Onsen and how Onsen is related to healing. We also suggested that the front part of the packaging would have a transparent spot to show the milk inside, and the milk would act as the Onsen. The packaging of the milk would be continuous. The milk packaging would come in two size. A small one that is free and will be given to the people prior them entering the Onsen so they could enjoy it after they leave. A big one so people can purchase it if they're still interested in knowing more about Onsen. Aside from that, we also wanted to create a broucher so people could read more about Onsen as well as creating a milk carten that would be interactive.

The feedback from Ms Anis was that she wants us to just focus on one set, which means we should just do 3 boxes of milk. She really like the idea of having one part of the packaging be transparent. She wants us to decide if we were to work with a existing milk company or if we want to create our own brand. If we're creating our own, she hopes that the brand name could be easily remembered and maybe we could work on word play. As our packaging is continuous, she thinks it's a very good idea as it would become a collectable item. She also suggested that 2 of us can work on the box, 1 on graphics, 1 on slides.

After our consultation, we decided that we would go back home and process our thoughts then come out the following day to discuss more on how we should do it. For the whole week, we came back to school for the project.

25/02/20 (Day 1)

The first thing we did was discuss about our brand name.

It was a very long process and we thought of different, weird names for our brand. One way of us trying to come out with the name is thinking of words that were related to our topic such as water, milk, healing, etc. After that, we tried to think of random syllables and try searching online for their meanings.

In the end, we decided that Misuru would be a good name as milk in Japanese is Miruku so it kind of rhymes with it. Another thing is Mi stands for undone and suru means done, which would imply that our milk brand is the way to end your trip to the Onsen. We also notice that suru also rhymes with susu which means milk in Bahasa Melayu, so it kind of sell the idea even more in our opinion.

With that, we roughly sketched out the logo design. We knew that we wanted something long and we wanted to combine the Japanese syllables in a fun way. In the end, we thought that the alignment looked cool.

26/01/20 (Day 2)

We had a very long discussion on how we wanted our packaging to be continuous. In the end, we concluded that the packaging would be continuous while standing itself, meaning 3 sides of the milk packaging are continuous. Then when 3 different milk packaging are put together, they would also be able to form a continuous picture. This means when you look at all the packaging from the front, they will form a picture, same goes to when all of the same sides of the packaging are aligned.

Figure 2.3 Concept - Heron Side

With that in mind, we all sketched our ideas out. We gave ourselves 30 mins to draft our sketch and start proposing our ideas.

Figure 2.5 My Draft - Front

Figure 2.6 My Draft - Heron Side

Our finalise design concept was that our design would be more minimalistic so the graphics would be easier to understand (proposed by Phang Shuen). We would include different seasons to show that there are different types of Onsen which would tie well with us showing the milk through the transparent layer and also because Onsen is a bath that people can visit in any season (proposed by Chia Min). Buildings from Edo Period can be added as we wanted to show that the Onsen we went to was heavily inspired by Edo Period architecture (proposed by me). Then finally, we would use the heron drawn by Samantha because she drew it way better than anyone of us. We also wanted our logo to be straight.

At the end of the day, we went home and I worked on the draft that would combine all of our proposed ideas.

We also worked on the colour scheme.

27/02/20 (Day 3)

I showed the draft that I created beforehand :

Figure 3.1 Draft of Illustration of the packaging

After showing the drafts to my teammates, we decided that the idea is workable but the we can decrease the excessive number of mountains.

We also thought of what we wanted to write on the quote side.

Phang Shuen send us the templete that we would be using for the packaging.

Figure 3.2 Templete

Once the templete part was done, we all worked on different task. Chia Min tried to illustrate the logo and did research on which typeface we want to use. In the end, we all agreed on Gill Sans SD.

Figure 3.3 Original Logo Design

Chia Min also did the nutritient facts with the help of Phang Shuen searching for actual reference for nutritient facts.

Phang Shuen and Samantha worked on the buildings in illustrator while I continued working on the background in illustrator.

28/02/20 (Day 4)

Chia Min and I went to print a mini version of our packaging before we insert all the assets as we wanted to make sure the background is align. However, we accidentally printed it too small but I guess it's cute.

Once that was done, I imported all of the assets into Illustrator. We also continued to work on the logo design since we wanted more alternatives.

Figure 4.5 Redrew the logo

We weren't that satisfied with the logo so I redrew a few more versions of the logo. In the end, we used the second last one.

Figure 4.6 Importing the Logo and added other aspects to the packaging

Samantha and Chia Min also worked really hard in illustrating the heron.

Figure 4.7 Heron Illustration

The first one was drawn by Samantha, second and third by Chia Min.

Figure 4.8 Imported the Heron

As the heron was imported into the packaging file, we did a second printing of a slightly bigger version to estimate our final outcome and see if there are any more changes to be made.

I only show the process for one of the packaging as it's very similar with the other two so I don't want it to be too lengthy.

29/02/20 (Day 5)

We made slight changes to the background colour and mountain colour so the difference between the seasons would be a little more obvious. We also added snow to the rooftop for the first packaging. We also adjusted the initial sizing of the milk packaging from 14cm height to 9cm because we noticed that the size doesn't make sense since we wanted it to be finished by one person in one serving.

Figure 5.1 Adding Snow

Once that was done, we went to print our final packaging design.

Figure 5.2 Final Design - First Packaging

Figure 5.3 Final Design - Second Packaging

Figure 5.4 Final Design - Third Packaging

We then cut out the packaging, made a plastic layer, coloured paper, cut them out and paste it inside the box.

Finally, we assembled the box.

After drafting the rationale. We thought it was a bit too long so we swap the rationale with our description in the slides.

Phang Shuen compiled all of the slides and continued with our progress for this project and explained about our product :
