Project 1 : Proposal
Week 1 (06/01/20)
After we got into groups, we discussed on the topics that we wanted to try researching on. I compiled all of the preliminary ideas and send it into our group chat. We also created a Google Docs so we could put all of our research together.
In the end, we did our research on Chopsticks, Harajuku Fashion, Yami Kawaii, Samurai inspired clothing, Pornographic Materials, Hot Spring and Magatama.
While doing our research, we noticed that we couldn't find much about Samurai inspired clothing and we weren't entirely sure of our topics as we moved on. Topics like chopsticks, Harajuku fashion, yami kawaii didn't really have strong myths behind it.
However, we decided to get consultation from our lecturers to see what we can work on and how we could improve.
After the first consultation with Ms Anis and Mr Asrizal, they wanted us to work on a few things. Here is a summary of our consultation :
Week 2 (13/01/20)
Based on our feedback, we created a second Google Docs as the previous one was already very long and more than half of the ideas were already rejected. We continued our research on chopsticks, onsen, magatama, and kimono. (Later on after our consultation, we added "Tori" as a topic, therefore it's briefly shown in the slides below.)
We also started to work on our slides so it would be easier for us to present to Ms Anis during our second consultation.
Below is our draft presentation slide :
After our second consultation, we came into conclusion that :
Week 3 (20/01/20)
After our lecture for Intercultural Design, we decided to ask Ms Anis if our direction was correct by showing her our slides. For our consultation, Samantha actually recorded it so it would be easier for us to refer back to what exactly we discussed during the consultation.
On 22/01/20, we had a WhatsApp group call to check if our slides were on the right track (as we made a lot of adjustments and added information even after our consultation. During our WhatsApp call, Samantha retrace back the important points that would help us with our slides by listening to the recording. Here are the points that were mentioned during the consultation :

Week 4 (27/01/20)
We presented with our slides on 30/01/20 and we made some amendments based on the feedback we received.
Basically, Ms Anis and Mr Charles were happy with our proposal but they wanted us to change both of our topic's research questions and objective. This is because we had too many and some weren't exactly related to our topic. They also wanted it to be more design related. Also, for magatama, they wanted us to focus more on magatama since it's a special and interesting topic so we also changed our research questions and all to fit the change in focus.
Below is our new and final proposal :

After the first consultation with Ms Anis and Mr Asrizal, they wanted us to work on a few things. Here is a summary of our consultation :
- Our research was a bit too shallow in general. We didn't really find a connect with the myths and current design. We also didn't know the main reason and takeaway of the myths to relate it to modern design. With that, our lecturers recommended we look into myths and their meanings, then find the connection of it with contemporary design.
- Some of our topics are sub-culture. Sub-culture goes against myth. Our lecturers suggest that we drop those topics related to sub-culture (Harajuku Fashion & Yami Kawai)
- They didn't really look into our topic on Samurai and Pornography Materials.
- They recommended we focus on Onsen and Magatama since they're more interesting topics while also continuing our research for chopsticks to see if it's a workable topic.
- Think of other topics and present 5 topics during our next consultation with Ms Anis.

Below is our draft presentation slide :
After our second consultation, we came into conclusion that :
- Our group's direction still isn't really clear so Ms Anis helped us a lot by trying to explain how exactly we should look at our topics to make it easier for us to find more on our topic.
- Chopstick's origin and is a bit TOO Chinese. In the slides, we mentioned about Confucius and Ms Anis said that it was more too history. I told her about the myth of chopstick by memory and she said that it's whole story/myth is from China so it's not really appropriate for our project.
- Magatama and Onsen is good, but we can try to find more modern day applications.
- Also, we can connect Onsen with water and Magatama with luck so our topic will be much broader and we can do much more research about it.
- We should think of one more extra topic to make 3 topics in total so we have 2 back ups.
During our consultation, Samantha took down notes and Ms Anis actually wrote down some useful notes on Samantha's note pad for our reference. Here are the notes :
